Tata Punch - The Micro SUV
Tata's Punch has been described as a sharp hatchback product with SUV 'DNA. The new ‘sub-compact SUV’ connects the size and size of the section between the Tiago NRG cross-hatchback and the Nexon compact SUV and from front it looks similar to Tata Harrier. The Punch is a car with only front wheels setup but it is designed to travel on rough Indian roads. It is designed as an SUV from the ground up and looks like an SUV family, with a flat bonnet and a lamp arrangement to build a strong family bond with a large Harrier and Safari. The glossy black grille is a closed panel with an arrow-shaped hole in the back.

Punch has a purposeful shape of SUV look, and while diamond cut alloys comes with an attractive 16-inch tyre profile, they do not fill large springs of square wheels. The thick side cover, black pillars and roof break the monotone, and like Altroz, the rear door handles are fitted to the C-column.
Some may find the background design not so good or having lack in feeling like SUVs compared to the aggressive front, but the cool-looking tail-shaped headlights have tri-arrow LED elements that help Punch. Like other cars of Tata's, Punch also plays with the best Easter eggs you can find, such as the one-horned rhino horn on the back air screen and glovebox. If we compare to other compact SUVs, the Punch is smaller in size and has the same footprint as the Maruti Swift. However, its height is the same as that of the Tata Nexon and the high roof and straight columns contribute to that SUV-like look.
New fresh design and having youthful exteriors are complemented by a stylish and equally fun interior. The layered dashboard design is lovely to watch; different white panels, engraved plastics and other materials not only look attractive, but also feel very comfortable. A free-standing touch screen, climate control buttons, steering wheel, and a set of digital components are shared with the Altroz premium hatchback.
Ingress and egress are air vents with doors that open 90-degree and seats are set high. The front seats are nice and comfortable, but thigh support is limited for tall height passenger. The good thing is that these seats can be folded up to meet your needs, and the bottom window line offers good visibility. A reversible camera with flexible guideline makes fun and easier while parking.
There is ample space for two to six feet to sit one behind the other, and that adds comfort to the space under the front seats for folding feet. The rear head room is provided ample for everyone except the tallest passengers. The flat floor adds to the comfort of the third passenger from time to time, however, the small width of the car makes the three seating more compact. No rear air-vent is provided.

Coming to Boot - 319-liters (366-liters when measured up to the ceiling), the Punch boot is almost the same size as Maruti Brezza's, and the owners also found flexibility to fold down the back seat.

Engine - Tata Punch
The Punch comes with the same engine 1.2-liter, three-cylinder petrol engine, naturally aspirated like the Tiago, Tigor and Altroz, but the engine has been modified for this system. Tata re-introduced air intake through the ram-air system, which aims to increase durability. This engine produces 86hp and 113Nm of torque, but it puts in a punch weight of 1,035kg and the output is found to be more than ideal.
Engine improvements and switching to BS6 emission levels have resulted in a slower power delivery and the unit often feels better than in its old days. It's very smooth, though it is still not refined or has no vibe like Maruti's K-series engines. It sounds grainy and there is also a small cylinder thrum too, but if accurate, it only sounds over 4,000rpm.
The good thing is that the engine performs its daily functions with ease and its short rotation (first and second) makes it easy to operate, so it closes the tight spaces easily. Use a planned driving style and you will do road work from time to time satisfactorily. But the demand for faster work and the engine feels out of place in its comfort zone. Fast passing roads will require careful planning and operation of the gearbox to make progress. The 5-speed manual has no effort in its operation, but the shifts are not as smooth as other competitors. Happily, its clutch is lightweight and easy to operate.
Tata Punch compact SUV is equipped with engine start-stop feature, in order to save fuel while idling, turning off the engine when the car is stopped. This system is quick to respond, which is why you will need to press the clutch and wait for the engine to restart before installing the gear.
Another way to transmit is the Marelli-sourced 5-speed automated manual transmission (AMT), which feels very refined. The gearbox runs smoothly, up to AMTs, and the gap between the gears is well contained. Fun activity is a bit curious but easy to get used to, and especially useful for go-stop traffic.
Punch AMT is best driven in a slow pace. The gearbox has a tendency to shift up a high gear at earliest (in the interest of the fuel economy) and get caught by erratic throttle responses, leading to annoying exits while the transmission decides to switch to lower gear.
Another strange thing with AMT is that while moving slowly from the fourth gear, it sometimes continues to run at the same speed and sounds like the car ‘running’, thus forcing you to press even the brake pedal even more to control its downhill. Tiptronic mode provides more power than manual control, although here too the gearbox tends to go up automatically.
Punch movement and balance management are evident. It turns off the road like a very heavy car and its stability at high speeds is very good. Punch directions are easy, consistent and accurate, but not as sharp as Altroz. Its damp structure, light road weight and comfortable feel of steering make you very comfortable in the corners. While driving enthusiasts will be left longing for the powerful performance of the engines, most owners will be satisfied with all its packaging. Its brakes feel natural and progressive, and their brakes work with confidence.
