Types of Bike Engine and Common Issues for Bike Engine Heating


Types of Bike Engine

Engine is the most important component for any vehicle, like cars, bikes,  trucks, trains, ships, aeroplanes etc. Engine is the combination of parts that work together for any vehicle and help to move the vehicle or burn fuel to generate heat which then used to work. Today i am going to discuss about the types of bikes engines. 

Basically in bikes there are three types of engine is used

Air cooled bike engine

Oil cooled bike engine

Liquid cooled bike engine

 1. Air Cooled Bike Engine 

This is the is entry level bikes engines for smaller capacity engine bikes like 100cc,110cc, 125cc etc. this engine is used in bikes with lower weight & complexity means simple one.

These engines use air circulation to maintain the engine temperature to save them from any damage and work well.

Engine is cooled only by the circulating air over, its hot surface and parts and hence it is known as Air Cooled Engine. Air cooled engine has simple design & there is FINS on outer surface of head and this increases the surface area and hence work like heat sink. As these FINS provide a larger surface area, hence it helps to achieve better cooling for bike engine.

These engines used in entry level bikes like two wheeler such as scooters, bikes, ATV'S, small generators etc.

 2.Oil Cooled Engine

In this type of engine oil is used as coolant, basically to remove heat from internal combustion of engine. The hot engine transfers its heat to oil and then, it passes through a heat-exchanges, mainly a type of radiator known as OIL COOLER. Now again cooled oil flows back into the hot parts of engine to cool and this process repeats continuously.

This process also uses atmospheric air for cooling process. Oil is used for cooling rather then water because of some reasons:-

(a) Oil has high boiling point then water.

(b) Oil does not evaporate, as water evaporates.

(c) Water has corrosive property while oil not.

 Oil cooled engine is better then air cooled engine.

 3.Liquid Cooled Engine

In this engine type a special cooling liquid called coolant is used for cooling engine.

Three main components works for cooling engine are:--

(a)Coolant

(b)Fan

(c)Radiator

 As liquid engine is most advanced engine and hence produces more power/torque then both air and oil cooled engine. A liquid cooled engine cooled by liquid & thus maintains better control on temperature. This is heavy engine then air cooled engine.

Whenever the bike engine’s temperature goes up beyond a specific temperature, then it starts cooling and stops when reached to normal temperature. Means system detects the temperature and cools it down and stops soon when reached to standard temperature automatically. This engine is used to gain high performance in heavy bikes.

Basic advantages & features:-

(a) Bike with liquid cooled engine is smoother n more resistant to breakdown then air cooled.
(b) Liquid cooled engine produces more      power then air and oil cooled engines.
(c) Liquid cooled engine maintains a better control over temperature.
(d) Better performance, smooth ride experience.

Worried About Bike Engine Engine   or  common issues for Bike Engine excess heating

Sometimes we think that our bike engine is heating more then the normal heating. But why engine heats?

 As in engine there is Piston that constantly blasting to run the bike, so this blasting produces heat and hence bike engine becomes hot.Today I will let you know, In which conditions bike engine heat more then the normal heating and how the same can be avoided, so that our bike remain healthy for longer period.

Some of the conditions in which bike engine heats more then normal and the reason behind it are

1. Make sure front part of engine is not covered with anything. Since covering will stop air circulation which helps keeps the engine cool.

2. Engine head fins should not be dirty. It should be cleaned as it may lead to excess heating and it also stops heat sink in cooling process.

3. Both wheel should be freely movable

4. If not then engine have to work more to move it then normal and hence it lead to excess heating. 

Engine area overall should not be oily, dirty. As it may be one of the reasons for excess heating. Periodically change the engine oil and use good quality of oil always, as due to heating thickness of engine oil decreases slowly and slowly hence performance of the bike will decrease.

Above are the some situations that led to excess heating and same can be avoid with little care and maintenance. In actual when bike stops while running, in this condition we can say that bike engine is heating excess and need quick action against it.
